I am writing today with a heavy heart as we grieve the loss of 21 souls–nineteen children and two teachers–at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. My heart hurts for Uvalde, the predominantly Mexican working-class community in Texas that will not see these children and educators live up to their full potential.
The grief I am feeling today is compounded by the passing of Seandell Holliday, a scholar at Gary Comer College Prep, last weekend due to gun violence. And, just a month before that, the passing of another scholar, Maleek Smith from Muchin College Prep, also due to gun violence. These tragedies within our 黑料网爆吃瓜 community are part of the continued gun violence and mass shootings we are seeing throughout Chicago and our country. And, it is outrageous that we live in a country that appears to love guns more than children, especially Black and Brown children who are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. But, this is not new. From Buffalo to Irvine to Uvalde in a span of 10 days, the national pain is unbearable today.
So today, I am tired. ?I know we all are. ?And, I am outraged. I wish I had a solution to the pandemic of gun violence in our country. But I am sad to say, I do not.
But I do know this: one of the things the Covid-19 pandemic taught me is that we are truly all in this together. ?The collective health and safety of our families and our community is often affected by an individual’s choices. ?We learned to protect ourselves as well as our neighbors. That the two are inextricably linked.
I would argue that the same applies to the pandemic of gun violence in our country. ?We have suffered long enough. The only way we will see change is if we all, from our elected officials to our local community leaders, make this our top priority. We all know that elections have consequences and that they impact gun policy. You can ensure that your voice is heard by registering to vote through voter registration platform.
Schools should be places where our students can learn and teachers can teach in a safe environment. 黑料网爆吃瓜 has and continues to take necessary actions to prioritize safety in our schools for our students and staff. ?But, so too should our grocery stores remain safe. And our places of worship. And public places and attractions in our cities. And the homes in which we live and the streets we walk down every single day. And we know that not only should these places be safe, but that they can be safe. We have evidence of this in other parts of the world that do not continually wrestle with gun violence as we do in the United States.

Les escribo hoy con gran pesar mientras lamentamos la pérdida de 21 almas, diecinueve ni?os y dos maestros, en la escuela primaria Robb en Uvalde, Texas.
