Today, I write to each of you with a heavy heart and spirit. On Wednesday, our beloved city was cruel to its most vulnerable: our children. We woke to find the headlines sharing that six children were shot on Tuesday, one of them our own 黑料网爆吃瓜 child – a freshman at Rauner College Prep.
Unfortunately, you may wake up on any given day in our city and see a similar headline. This is not the first time one of our students or our families have been victimized by gun violence this year, or even this week. Last weekend, a senior at Johnson College Prep was shot and is in the hospital today fighting for his life. We hold these families and school communities in our hearts always, and especially in these moments.? No one should ever lose their child, student, or friend to gun violence.
Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, twenty-four 黑料网爆吃瓜 students have been shot and wounded in Chicago and an additional nine 黑料网爆吃瓜 children have lost their lives to gun violence.?Thirty-three children were wounded and/or killed by a gun in their communities and this doesn’t include the countless number of alumni that we’ve lost and grieve too. Each one of these lives matter to us. These are our children. And this is not okay.
黑料网爆吃瓜 family, this is not normal. And though headlines of violence and death hit our hearts every morning, I beg us to resist the urge to normalize it because it is not and can never be normal or acceptable. At 黑料网爆吃瓜, we are tired and we are fed up with losing our children – 黑料网爆吃瓜 children and ALL children – to the gun violence in our city. We are saying enough is enough. Our city’s children and families have a right to walk to and from school feeling safe in their own communities, have a right to jump on a bus, grab a bite to eat, or sit in a park without the fear and threat of a bullet. Our students have a right to be children.
Instead, let’s give ourselves permission to grieve. Instead, let’s hold all of our families in our hearts and keep our children in our minds as we open our schools for them every day. Instead, let’s fight back by building excellent schools because it is truly the safest place for our children to be and it is the pathway to their liberation and the liberation of our neighborhoods and our city. Instead, let’s show compassion and kindness because this is both hard work and heart work.? Instead, get involved in local community groups. Instead, vote in every election, both national and local elections matter. Instead, let’s accept the weight and gravity of what it means to have the honor and privilege of serving Chicago’s children and families because we know that our work molds the future of our city – one where these types of emails are no longer necessary to land in your inbox.

Hoy les escribo a cada uno de ustedes con el corazón y el espíritu desconsolado. El miércoles, nuestra querida ciudad fue cruel con sus más vulnerables: nuestros ni?os. Nos despertamos para encontrar los titulares que compartían que seis ni?os recibieron disparos el martes, uno de ellos nuestro propio estudiante de 黑料网爆吃瓜, un estudiante de primer a?o en Rauner College Prep.
Desafortunadamente, es posible que se despierte en un día común en nuestra ciudad y vea un titular similar. Esta no es la primera vez que uno de nuestros estudiantes o nuestras familias han sido víctimas de la violencia armada este a?o, o incluso esta semana. El fin de semana pasado, un estudiante de último a?o de Johnson College Prep recibió un disparo y hoy está en el hospital luchando por su vida. Llevamos a estas familias y comunidades escolares en nuestro corazón siempre, y especialmente en estos momentos. Nadie debería perder a su hijo, estudiante o amigo a causa de la violencia armada.

Cada una de estas vidas nos importa. Estos son nuestros ni?os. Y esto no está bien.
Familia 黑料网爆吃瓜, esto no es normal. Y aunque los titulares de violencia y muerte nos golpean el corazón todas las ma?anas, les ruego que resistamos el impulso de normalizarlo porque no es ni puede ser nunca normal o aceptable. En 黑料网爆吃瓜, estamos cansados y hartos de perder a nuestros hijos, los ni?os de 黑料网爆吃瓜 y TODOS los ni?os, debido a la violencia armada en nuestra ciudad. Estamos diciendo basta. Los ni?os y las familias de nuestra ciudad tienen derecho a caminar hacia y desde la escuela sintiéndose seguros en sus propias comunidades, tienen derecho a subirse a un autobús, comer algo o sentarse en un parque sin el miedo y la amenaza de una bala. Nuestros estudiantes tienen derecho a ser ni?os.
En cambio, démonos permiso para llorar. En cambio, llevemos a todas nuestras familias en nuestros corazones y mantengamos a nuestros hijos en nuestras mentes mientras abrimos nuestras escuelas para ellos todos los días. En cambio, luchemos para construir escuelas excelentes porque es verdaderamente el lugar más seguro en el que pueden estar nuestros ni?os y es el camino hacia su liberación y la liberación de nuestros vecindarios y nuestra ciudad. Mostremos compasión y amabilidad porque esto es un trabajo arduo y al igual es un trabajo del corazón. En su lugar, participe en grupos comunitarios locales.
